Personal Laptop Repair


Students can bring their laptops to ETC to check hardware, reset or install the operating system, and remove viruses.

Policy

  • You are responsible for your own backup.
  • You will need your UTEP ID to pick up your laptop.
  • You will need to download the product keys for Microsoft products available to students.
  • ETC will not be liable for issues ocurring during repair of your laptop.

Tools for Windows

  • How to Do a Clean Install of Windows 10.
  • DriverMax to Update the Computer Drivers.
  • Check your Hard Drive with CrystalDiskInfo
    • Get the .exe with size 3.8 MB.
    • Only check status for Good, Caution, or Bad.
    • Should only see Good status, otherwise your hard disk is going to crash, so do a backup.
  • Create a recovery drive: Even if your PC cannot start, you can use a recovery drive to reset it or troubleshoot problems. If you backup system files to this drive, you'll also be able to reinstall Windows.

    • Create Recovery Drive.
    • Select Back up system files to the recovery drive,which will allow you to re-install the OS if needed.
    • You will need a 16 GB USB flash drive.
    • Label the drive "Windows 10 Recovery Drive".
  • Boot USB recovery drive if needed.
    • Insert flash drive in USB.
    • Press F12 on a Dell System.
    • Boot from USB.
    • Select keyboard language.
    • Troubleshoot.
    • Recover from disk.
  • How to create an image backup in Windows 10 and restore it, if need be
    • You will need an external hard drive large enough to fit the current drive in.
    • Do a windows search for 'Control Panel' > 'System and Security' > 'File History'
    • Click 'system image backup' in lower left of the window.
    • Click 'create a system image'
    • Follow the steps from the wizard, and wait for the backup to finish.
  • Try System Restore when your computer is slow after installing a driver or software.
    • Search
    • Recovery
    • Open System Restore
    • click Next and follow the instructions.
  • Factory Image Restore
    • This option restores your laptop to the state when you purchased it. This method is preferred instead of formatting, because it may keep your data files and programs intact.
    • First, perform a data backup of your laptop.
    • Turn on or restart your laptop.
    • For Dell laptops, press F8.
    • Select Repair Your Computer.
    • Select Dell Factory Image Restore.
